The Palmisano memo

Wow! (see Erie Daily Times-News article, "Garvey's Accusers Say Memo Is 'Vindication' ", 8/21/05, via my "goerie" link; search keyword: "WILLIAM P. GARVEY") And with no further ado, the memo:

MEMORANDUM

TO: MRS. MARLENE MOSCO, CHAIRPERSON, and
MERCYHURST COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

FROM: MICHAEL M. PALMISANO (his signature appears here)

RE: STATUS OF REVIEW

DATE: DECEMBER 15, 2004

Since November 5, 2004 when the Board of Trustees retained me to conduct a review of the allegations leveled against William P. Garvey, Ph.D. as chronicled in the article published in the Erie Times-News on October 10, 2004, I have coordinated and conducted a review of the various documents and interviews of dozens of persons, including the principals identified in the newspaper article. To date, our team has devoted more than 300 hours to this review.

The investigation remains ongoing and significant information continues to be discovered and analyzed; however, the quantity and quality of such information received at this juncture of our review compels me to inform the Board of Trustees that the allegations contained in the newspaper article appear to have merit. Secondarily, cumulative facts and other information have come forth which tend to support the original allegations. Further, and perhaps even more significant, the information gathered in recent days demonstrates that persons - in addition to those identified in the article - will level similar allegations of misconduct against Dr. Garvey.

I conveyed this information to you on Monday, December 13, 2004 and also to William C. Sennett on Tuesday, December 14, 2004. I now provide the forgoing information in the spirit of our ongoing good faith attempts to keep you and the ladies and gentlemen of the Board of Trustees informed of salient developments in our review in order to arm the Board with the information necessary to preserve and protect the best interest of Mercyhurst College in general and the Board of Trustees in particular.

I truly hope this gives other victims the support and affirmation they need to come forward. We will believe you! We DO believe you!

What credibility remains for any of these people? The Board, the faculty, the Sisters of Mercy, those who signed the ad?
The sooner everybody comes clean, the better. A lie begets another lie. It's only going to get worse.
Eventually, even the rats will abandon ship.

I think that Marlene Mosco needs to resign from the board at Mercyhurst. In no way, shape, or form should Mercyhurst College put up with having this sleezebag at the helm of their board. Nor should she this person be in any kind of position to make decisions that effect the college. Enough is enough.

I wonder if Marlene Mosco's superiors at PNC Bank condone her behavior. Let's hit them in the pocket book and boycott PNC Bank.

Who is the greater evil, Garvey or Mosco? Both should rot in hell.

"But since the people on the board were handpicked by Garvey, it's hard to see them getting rid of Marlene."

OR installing a new president who wouldn't put up with their ridiculous, corrupt, small-town "business leader" antics. The only way any change could come about at Mercyhurst, unless there was a truly massive public outcry and drastic admissions losses, would be for the next president to get rid of all the Garvey supporters at the college and issue some sort of public apology/statement about the events of the last two years. But who is running the presidential search? THE VERY PEOPLE WHO CAUSED ALL THE PROBLEMS!!! There's no way in hell Mosco, Sennett etc. are going to allow an outsider to take control. Rest assured that they, Garvey, and the rest of the gang are going to appoint some stooge who will let the status quo continue. No matter how many articles the Times publishes, they'll just keep on going, unless the faculty or the Sisters of Mercy decide to develop a conscience and take a public stand.

They are supposed to be courting Jim Barker for the job right now.

The paper says the number of Erie schools that flunked state and federal standards went from 4 to 6 this year. The spin for Barker is that the criteria is unfair so don't just go by the hard facts. Just like his 'business friend" Marlene Mosco who doesn't count Palmisano's memo as sustantive. Looks like Barker's the right man for the job. What I found interesting is that when Barker explained his position, he used a basketball analogy. Something a former coach and possible employer can understand? Or even suggested he say?

A demand for the names of the other candidates is/will be a great idea (cue claims of "confidentiality" from the Board - remember, it's against their policy to even release the names of their members). Even if it isn't Barker, *whoever* is chosen (unless the selection process is exposed or derailed within the next few weeks) will just be a patsy, and will end up presiding over a crumbling institution whose finances, enrollment, standards, and reputation will be crashing down around him or her. And even then, if they do realize what they've gotten themselves into and try to "clean house" and change policy, they'll probably be stymied by all the Garvey cronies within Mercyhurst. In some ways, a housecleaning forced through by the court of public opinion might be the only way to solve this - until Mosco and Sennett (and the supposedly "neutral" Board Members, administrators, faculty, etc. who have yet to call for any explanations or resignations) are gone, Mercyhurst will just keep steamrolling over the city.

Good point about Barker's background. Mutual blackmail has obviously been one of the key factors in Garvey's 50-year "reign." I wonder what type of dirt he has on Mosco, Sennett, and the rest of the board members? (Much less the rest of the Meg Loncharic "Society Page" gang?)

If Barker comes to Mercyhurst, look for Mercyhurst to bring his wife in too.

Jim Barker put his wife Jo into a job with the Erie School District. She's paid a scandalously high salary (Can you say nepotism??).
