"For Christ's sake, use your head"

Oddly, the quality, and sometimes quantity, of my playing time at practice was directly related to the frequency of my having "treatment". After recent treatment sessions Garvey seemed much more encouraging, ready with praise, and supportive. If I hadn't seen him in a while, his criticisms, name-calling, and belittling could be withering. In hindsight, I now wonder if I was placed in situations in which I would be more likely to succeed or fail based on the degree to which I acquiesced off the court.

Regardless, as the time since my last treatment lengthened, my game, my confidence, and my self-esteem were suffering. He repeatedly told me I was not strong enough and a step too slow. He would never allude to the treatment in public but the implications were clear: to achieve my goal I needed what only he could do for me, and to do otherwise was sheer stupidity. One of Garvey's tools of manipulation was to appeal to your intelligence, or if you didn't do as he wanted, lack thereof. On many occasions he said to me, "Jack, for such a smart kid, you make a lot of stupid decisions. Use your head. For Christ's sake, use your head." Evidently, in his mind, or more importantly in my own, I needed to link, irrefutably, avoidance of therapy with being a damn fool. I knew I wasn't stupid and I knew I was no fool, but I was too young to understand Garvey's ability to manipulate the situation and his ability to manipulate me to not only choose to submit to the treatment but to have to come to him and ask for it. And ask for it I did.

During one of my more recent trips to Garvey's residence he had told me that besides my lack of strength I also had a genetic trait, which he had noticed in other members of my family, that made me a step or two slower than I should be. He said that my protruding buttocks was symptomatic of a problem that caused my hips to lock up. "Jack, do you know the difference between 'quickness' and 'speed'? You're not terribly fast but you're OK once you get going. What we need to work on are those hips and your quickness, that first step." Oddly enough, he said my body and my problem were common in Blacks. (I wasn't mentally agile enough at the time to ask why, if that was the case, the African-americans that I was playing on the playground and those I watched on TV didn't seem slow or hip-locked at all.) He said that the exercise we performed, when I got on top of him and I rotated my hips, would "unlock" this problem. Yet another compelling reason for more "treatment".

As bizarre as this had all become, in my mind, I still blindly trusted him. I think my first real doubts about what we were doing up in his bedroom came when during one of our sessions, while I was naked on top of him dutifully rotating my hips, he told me to stick my tongue in his mouth and move it back and forth, and around in a circle. He said it would help raise my body temperature faster, facilitating the draining of my sinuses. He pulled the topsheet and blanket more completely up over the top of us as if to reinforce the need for heat. I was reluctant but I did as he said. The sour smell of coffee was on his breath and it tasted worse. His abrasive stubble grated against the skin around my mouth. I had no idea what I was doing. I mechanically moved my tongue back and forth inside his mouth and my drool began to pool where our mouths met and roll down his face. At one point he reached for the sleeve of his t-shirt and wiped his mouth clean. All the while I was still gyrating my hips.

I lost myself in the rhythmic nature of my movements and tried not to think about what was transpiring. I didn't want to think about what he was doing. The answers were not in my experience vocabulary. I was so young I hadn't even really thought about sex. It held no interest for me. Everything I knew was from one-liners the older guys bandied about the lockerroom, and that presented more questions and confusion than information. In lockerrooms everyone pretends to know more than they actually do. The lockerroom is about false bravado not the dissemination of any remotely accurate information. I waited for Garvey to say enough was enough, and eventually, he did. As usual he rolled me on to my left side and moved on to my sinuses. As had become the rule, this was followed by more upper body wrestling, which now included him wrapping his legs around mine and locking his legs at his ankles to make my escape more difficult. And this was followed by the flexibility exercises which entailed Garvey yanking and tugging as he pulled my hands behind my back and pushed against my shoulders attempting to touch my fingertips to the base of my skull.

For the first time Garvey asked me if I would like to shower before I dressed. From that day forward, he would invariably ask and I would always decline. Even though I had yet to sort out much of what was going on or how I felt about it, I knew all I wanted to do was get the hell out of there. I dressed, we got into his car, he drove to my neighborhood and dropped me off in front of my house.

I needed to think. The problem was I didn't know the questions let alone the answers. I did know something wasn't right. I was miserable. Life was miserable. I hated it and I hated myself. Although I couldn't put it into words yet, my heart, my soul, something inside me felt terribly wrong. Deeply scared. Deeply troubled. Deeply wrong. Something about Garvey was wrong. "Use your head, Jack. For Christ's sake, use your head."

Jack,
I've asked around and none of the folks I talked to remembers a Jack Hughes from the era you are writing about. No Jack Hughes in the right age group lives in the Erie area. So I assume this name is made up.
If that's the case, what authenticates this? For all I can tell, this is a rewrite of "Never Let Me Go." I understand that episodes will be similar -- a pedaphile, I presume, would use a tried and true strategy.
I initially opened this blog with an open mind, but I am having doubts.
You can answer me on this forum, or you can email me at maintopman@excite.com

How would you like this to be "authenticated," exactly? And why would you assume, given the frightening amount of power and influence Garvey has in this community, that the author WOULD use his real name? Anyone who dares to speak out about this is going to be on the receiving end of some serious retribution, whether it's in the form of vicious rumors (remember, Chuck Rosenthal is a crazy drug addicted liar from California), suspicion, doubt, or attempts to quiet them. (Of course, just because YOU don't know a "Jack Hughes" doesn't mean that one doesn't exist, and the author may be using his real name; if so, he has tremendous courage.)Finally, OF COURSE the episodes described are going to be similar. Pedophiles (note spelling) DO use "tried and true strategies," and most of this man's victims will have the same stories to tell. Does that mean we should be suspicious of them for offering "rewrites" of Rosenthal's book?

I fully expected that one victim's story would carry the same sorts of facts as another victim's. What I didn't expect was a polished writing style that very closely approaches Rosenthal's.
You speak of fearing Garvey's power from retirement. I can understand that. But has anything happened to any of the people who came forward so far, other than knee-jerk insults and weak disparagements of character? Those people used their names and they still get by, as far as I know.
Nevertheless, I can undeerstand that someone would want to use a pseudonymn in telling their story. Fine. But tell the readers of this blog it is a pseudonymn. To do otherwise puts a serious dent on credibility.
Regarding "Jack Hughes," a check of city directories for the time period shows no Hughes family living in the St. John's parish. The closest was on the lower east side. The Jack Hughes who lived at that address, from what I have been able to research, is dead now.
So we come to the question of authentication. What year did this start? When did it end? What high school did he end up at?
I expected since the newspaper stories in October that someone would come forward, if not publicly, then to the investigators. When I saw this, I thought someone finally had.

Everyone,
Anonymous 1 here.
I hope I haven't scared people away by asking questions. I just want people to be truthful aboiut who they are so that this blog can be treated with credibility.
Rather than people run away, people need to come forward. Matt and "Jack" and the others are right that more people need to come forward.
It's no surprise that people fear Garvey even if he is "retired." They know the intensity of his evil and the intensity of his minions who will do whatever he wants.
Up "on the hill" it's an open secret that some of the veeps still visit their prez regularly and for a few hours at a time. A lot of people think that is why he is still calling the shots. Who wouldn't be scared.
And they are worried that this guy can pickwho will be the next president by pulling strings on the board of trustees. Barker ... is he one of the favored candidates. Or even Fr. Rubino?
Vctims need to come out and tell, even by using pseudonyms, then maybe they can stopthis.
You have to believe the truth can set you free.So many of us who have ties to St. John's know all this is true because we heard too many stories during the years.
It is so wrong to say that was a different time. No. People were more trusting, that's all. But evil is evil. It must be stoppped.

Anonymous 2 here. These are all good points. I hope you can understand the tone of irritation in my initial response - obviously you can, given your knowledge of the situation and how strong Garvey remains in the community. This whole thing is just beyond reprehensible, both what Garvey did to his victims and the amount of power he STILL has in this community. More people do need to come forward, as we obviously can't rely on the local media or the city's power structure to do anything about this. (Which again is just astonishing; doesn't anyone in this city have any sense or morality? Or is everyone under Garvey's control and/or unwilling to challenge it?) It's us versus them. Where's the rest of "us"? And what happened to Jack?

Anonymous3 here to say:
We don't know who Jack Hughes is but what we do know is that we know him. Or somebody like him. Because parts of his story sound a lot like my story or your story or someone we know’s story because we saw it, too. We really don't care whether he's "authenticated" or not. None of us are "authenticated". He's writing about his molestation, perhaps anonymously, but he's actually talking about it. We, on the other hand, are all staying anonymous and all we're doing is talking about him. We're not talking about Garvey's screaming red face, belittling and threatening us, not talking about Garvey's hitting or hurting us, or wrenching our arms behind our backs or hitting us with an object. We're not talking about Garvey's naked spankings or testicle holding, or Garvey's physical therapy and private treatments. We certainly are not talking about our molestation. We’re avoiding the issue once again- what are we ashamed of that we won't even use our names here? It's confusing, I know, but maybe this is the place to get it all out, anonymously for now, until we finally see how many of us there are and we all get the balls to come forward.

To Jack: This site is fantastic. Great work. I hope you continue.
To anonymous 1,2,3:
Come on, what do you care? Why would you do so much research of checking through city registries, blah, blah, blah? Why would Chuck Rosenthal write a blog when he already wrote the book that started the whole thing? And yeah there is a big connection to St. John’s (there are a lot of them at Mercyhurst) but it's not just St. Johns people. It's wherever Garvey has been. Oil City, North Catholic, St. Peter's, Prep. How many of the inner circle or administrators did he coach and then bring along with him? Or their kids? How many of our coaches did he coach? Isn't that a little odd? Where did you hear rumors about the people who did use their names? From Garvey? From the inner circle or their friends? Interestingly enough when I looked back through the paper, Garvey had said he had always admired them (the Rosenthals) and that he was saddened and shocked by their accusations. Well, what would make Garvey admire drug addicts? The fact that they were being quiet? Conversely, at what point did someone admirable become a drug addict? When he made the accusation? There’s a disconnect here that makes this pure Garvey speak. Did anyone hear about the two veeps wives screaming and fist fighting in Old Main over whose husband was more loyal to Garvey? One of them supposedly got shipped out to North East. What do you think about the recent Garvey article in the paper? What in Christ's name is Garvey doing making any political decisions around here. Those people on C-cubed should be held accountable. Did Garvey get paid? This city has to be corrupt. A guy like Garvey must have something on somebody because he is still walking around and hanging with the big dogs. Maybe he is the big dog. If that's true it's time to get the hell out of here. Double that if you're twelve.
